What are Ohio Car Insurance Requirements?

In the State of Ohio, all drivers are required to purchase car insurance. The type of insurance required is called auto liability insurance. In Ohio, auto liability insurance ONLY covers injuries and damages to third parties and their property (the other driver(s), their vehicles and their passenger(s)). It does not provide coverage for you (the driver) or your property.

JANE CAUSES AN ACCIDENT: HERE’S HOW OHIO’S CAR INSURANCE LIABILITY COVERAGE WORKS

It’s been a long, stressful day and Jane is tired. She mistakenly misses the stop sign at the corner of her street and ends up causing a three-car accident involving a total of six people and two other vehicles (besides hers). All those involved are claiming injury and have serious vehicle damage.

Well, Jane has auto insurance so she should be covered, right?

With Jane’s Ohio state minimum level of liability coverage, the $50,000 she has in bodily injury coverage per accident may not go very far with six people claiming injury (remember you need to consider their medical bills and lost wages). Let’s say all those bills total over $100,000. Who pays the remaining $50,000?

Jane does!

Before we tell you why, here’s a little background.

CAR INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS IN OHIO

Ohio car insurance requirements are in place to make sure everyone is safe and protected.

There are two components to liability insurance:

1.Bodily Injury: Coverage for injuries to someone else including medical bills and lost wages.

2.Property Damage: Helps pay to repair damage to someone else’s vehicle or property such as a building or fence.

The State of Ohio requires that all drivers purchase the minimum level of liability coverage as follows:

$25,000 worth of bodily injury coverage per person.
$50,000 worth of bodily injury coverage per accident.
$25,000 worth of property damage coverage.

Protect Your Assets & Your Lifestyle with the Right Car Insurance Coverage for You

While these are the State’s minimums to get you on the road, as you’ll see with Jane’s case, it’s often not enough to protect her assets and her lifestyle.

The people Jane injured, and their insurance companies can come after her and her assets for the damage and injuries she caused.

That’s why we always suggest higher levels of coverage for all our clients. At The Insurance Pad, we suggest nothing less than $100,000 worth of bodily injury coverage per person, $300,000 worth of bodily injury coverage per accident and $100,000 worth of property damage coverage.

Whatever level of car insurance coverage you choose, we’re here to help you decide what’s best for you.
